Who is Janina Węgrzynowska

Collaboration between Jenny Brockmann (visual arts), Professor Ryszard Jablonski (head of Department of Mechatronics at the Warsaw University of Technology), engineers Adam Domański and Radosław Zacheja.

The group exhibition “WHO IS JANINA WĘGRZYNOWSKA?” was born out of a need to tell the stories of artists whose lives and works are fascinating, but who have found themselves outside the ‘art circuit,’ and thus remain unnoticed. The project began with Grey-Orange Painting (1979) by Janina Węgrzynowska from the Galeria Studio Collection. The video work “Study_Pokaz-Laserowy” by Jenny Brockmann produced for the exhibition “WHO IS JANINA WĘGRZYNOWSKA?” dealt with a project by Polish artist Janina Węgrzynowska in which she collaborated 2005 with engineers from the Warsaw Polytechnic. The collaboration was about the transformation of a drawing by Węgrzynowska into a laser show with music. In a three-channel video installation, Brockmann brings together interviews with the engineers involved along with images of Węgrzynowska‘s laser work as well as Brockmann‘s own studies of Janina Węgrzynowska‘s 1979 painting ‚Grey-Orange Painting‘, oil on canvas, from the Galeria Studio Collection, which is so important to the exhibition and in relation to which she fictitiously plans to create her own laser work in the film. The collage-like nature of the films emphasizes the processual character. Superimpositions of the images show language and technology, human and non-human actors involved in the process of creating the laser show. All color videosequences mark the work of Węgrzynowska and the new footage filmed by Brockmann appears in black and white. Thus, in a sense, a time image is reversed.
