Artist Talk: Jenny Brockmann on ‚Irreversible Moment‘, 11.06.2017, 11 a.m.
At present, much is talked about stress, acceleration and lack of time. But in today’s Western affluent societies we actually have much more time than previous generations ever had. So we’re not running out of time, we only fill it with more and more activities and sometimes lose a sense of reality. It is not time as such, but our way of dealing with it that keeps us in suspense.
Time is not a fixed entity. It can take very different forms. When do we perceive something as long, when as short? How do we experience boredom or stress, what is a premonition and what is a memory? How does it feel to be ahead of your time or to mourn the past? And is the past really irreversible and the future uncertain? Do we live on an inexorably advancing timeline or in rhythms and cycles?
Beyond the distinction between working time and leisure time, the exhibition explores ways out of predetermined time intervals. It examines time not as an increasingly scarce resource, but as a link that anchors us in the world and connects us with other people. The curators invite us to embark on a search for lost time through works of art, scenic installations, media contributions and everyday objects to explore it as a space of possibility for a fulfilled—and not only temporally filled—life.
